My People

As you can see, I've started a section about people. My people section, however, does not fall in to one of the above definitions (although they might fall in to the last!).

The "My People" section falls into the category of "People that have either influenced me or have inspired me". I've started off with two people for the moment, there will [probably] be more to follow:

Valerie Leon

Valerie LeonMy introduction to the actress Valerie Leon was at quite a young age. Bolstered by the fact that my Dad liked the lady too (quite a lot!) some of that enthusiasm must have passed to me and I found myself also in love with this beautiful, Amazonian actress from a very early age. About 10 or 11 years old, as I recall - all from watching one episode of The Persuaders, in which she played a "Space Queen".

So, from the Carry On films (which is all they showed on TV in the 70's and 80's!) to the headline starring (duel) part in a classic Hammer Horror film, this is my little "homage" to Valerie Leon - just a couple of pages to celebrate one of the most beautiful women in the world.

Nicholas Courtney

Nicholas CourtneyRather more sad is this particular section, as this is an obituary for one of my favourite Doctor Who actors ever (excepting The Doctor himself, obviously!).

The Brigadier was one of my favourite Doctor Who characters (beside The Doctor, naturally) and it with great sadness that we learnt of his passing on Tuesday 22nd February 2011 having suffered from a short illness.

Last seen in a Doctor Who TV programme in 2008 (The Sarah Jane Adventure's "Enemy of The Bane") Nicholas reprised the character of The Brigadier for us for the last time.

Eric Morecambe

Eric MorecambeI have to admit that probably more than anyone else in my life Eric Morecambe has probably had the biggest influence!

Their (then unique) brand of humour seemed to suit me straight away and I took to it (as a very "infuenceable" 10 year old) like a duck takes to water. It made me laugh. A lot. And still does to this very day!

I still love that Eric Morecambe humour, whether it's watching DVD's of the "Boys" themselves, or watching someone else clearly influenced by the inimitable Morecambe brand of humour.

What do you think of it so far? Bloody brilliant!!

Dick Emery

Dick EmeryOut from the myriad of comedy shows that were on television during the 1960's 1970's and indeed the 1980's, The Dick Emery Show was amongst one of my very favourites.

Shown between 1963 and 1981 (an impressive 18 years!) Dick Emery's character-based sketch humour was the appointment viewing throughout my youth.

Emery's enduring characters; Hettie, the Vicar, Gaylord the bovver boy, Clarence (Honkey Tonk), Mandy - all provided the young and the teenage me with hours of laughter - and a plethora of catch phrases.

Emery's shows regularily pulled in millions of viewers, some shows peaking at over 20 million. He appeared in several films, noteably The Fast Lady (1962) with Leslie Phillips, Stanley Baxter and James Robertson Justice and made a film of his own - based on his characters - Ooh, You Are Awful in 1972.

Although all of Emery's characters made me laugh - out loud - his most memorable performance (in my book, anyway) is his character James Maynard Kitchener Lampwick - the old codger cited to be his favourite character to play.
